Prime  Minister, Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – “AS we celebrate our Independence, it is my hope that many others will follow in your footsteps. It is my desire that our communities will mature with a strong sense of cohesion, tolerance, appreciation, engagement and pride. It is my perception that stronger communities can come about when we build trust, respect and support for each other.”

These were the words of Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas during his delivery of the feature address at the 25th Independence Anniversary Community Service and Disaster Management Awards Ceremony held at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel and Casino on National Heroes’ Day (Sep. 16).

Dr. Douglas expressed his pleasure in being able to congratulate the recipients of awards and encourage them to continue making a positive contribution to the country.

He added that it is an ideal occasion for the nation to show its appreciation to members of the various communities who have given time, energy and expertise in helping others and making the country a better place to live.

He stressed the importance in realising that the total endeavours of the awardees made a substantial mark on the lives of citizens and residents of St. Kitts-Nevis.

“Most importantly, your actions serve to influence the perceptions of our youth. By your example, I am sure that you have helped to improve the character and behaviour of our youth.

“Being a role model is not always easy, but it is important to the stability and growth of our Kittitian and Nevisian societies.

In many cases, it is about building relationships, sharing ideas, volunteering for some event, assisting in times of disaster, visiting the sick in hospitals and organising and coordinating community activities, mentoring, sponsoring and a host of other types of service,” he said adding, “The truth is that you commit yourself not because of monetary reward, but more so in the spirit of giving.”   ~~Adz:Left~~

PM Douglas also thanked the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for its dedication toward saving lives and the reduction of property damage, as it helps the nation to prepare for the impact and aftermath of natural hazards.

Community Service Awards were given to 36 individuals while nine received Disaster Management Awards. Special awards were given to five individuals who were successful in the Silver Jubilee Theme and Postage Stamp Competitions.
