BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SCORES of people stood in silence as the St. Kitts-Nevis flag was hoisted towards the heavens during a flag-raising ceremony held at Carifesta Village yesterday (Sept. 16).

The ceremony was attended by Parliamentary Representative the Hon. Cedric Liburd, representative of the Committee responsible for planning the activities to mark the Federation’s 25th Anniversary, Gus Williams, Parish Priest the Rev. Isaiah Phillip,  Brownies, Guides, Boys Brigades, Leaders, parents, teachers and villagers.

Before the flag was raised, remarks were given by Liburd, among others, who said the event was symbolic of the progress the Federation has made - progress which he said began in 1983.

“We are here once again to raise the flag here in St. Peters as part of the 25th Anniversary of our political Independence and …today is National Hero’s Day and we normally come here to raise the flag to bring some awareness to Independence and, at the same time, to show the young people the way to go as we develop our country.

“This year we are celebrating 25 years of political Independence under the theme Pride, Development, Progress; Independence 25 years of Success.

When we looked at the theme, we looked at ourselves as being proud for having come thus far for 25 years, and when we looked at our positions at the United Nations, international levels and the regional level, we must give God thanks for the many contributions and the support that we have received over the last 25 years, because before 25 years ago a lot of us were skeptical to whether or not we really could have been independent.

When we look at the development, we want to say that St. Kitts and Nevis, unlike many other countries throughout the world, has strived and has developed over the last 25 years.”

He said over the past 25 years, a foundation has been laid upon which the younger generation must build if the Federation is to see continued success.

Two members of the represented uniformed services proudly hoisted the Federation’s flag and the mild wind had it fluttering regally from the pole.

As a sign of respect and with a spirit of patriotism, all members of the uniformed bodies present at the ceremony, faced the flag – a symbol of nationhood – and saluted.  ~~~Adz:Right~~
