BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - STEADROY ‘CHALKIE’ SCOTT had the book thrown at him on Thursday (Nov. 1) when he was given the maximum sentence with hard labour for the wounding with intent and unlawful wounding of Kareem Richards.

Scott was convicted of the December 21, 2011 stabbing of Richards, which took place in the vicinity of the Kentucky Fried Chicken at about 9:00 p.m.

Following the incident, Richards had to travel to the twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to remove a sharp object which was part of the weapon that was broken and remained in his body when stabbed.

At the Basseterre High Court Thursday, Scott pleaded with the court to be lenient on him and to give him a chance to prove himself worthy of being a law-abiding citizen.

"I am very sorry to have wasted the court's time. Today I come humbly and sincerely apologising and begging for leniency so I can get one more chance to change. I would like to go back to work for my daughter," he said.

Scott asked for the opportunity to pay a fine and not be sentenced to prison, noting that his mother was a single parent and he did not want that for his daughter.

"I am begging you for a little chance. One more chance out in society to change my life for my daughter," he humbly said.

Scott's Social Inquiry Report described him as a troublemaker; one who displays negative behaviour. But it also noted that he has been repentant of his actions.

Before handing down sentence, Justice Thomas told Scott that people like him are bad influence on the Federation.

"It is people like you who reap havoc in society," he said.

His Lordship told Scott that it does not cost a bus fare to take a patient to Trinidad, noting that it is taxpayers dollars that had to foot the bill for the victim to get the necessary medical treatment that was needed.

Scott was then sentenced to serve 10 years in prison with hard labour, with the time he spent on remand deducted.
