Fire destroys wooden house in Cayon

Causes damage to nearby container with $$$$$ of items

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE damage caused by an early-morning fire that took place yesterday (Nov. 2) in Cayon, could amount to tens of thousands of dollars in losses, but thanks are being given to God that it resulted in no injuries.

Information reaching this media house indicates that the Basseterre Branch of the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services responded to a fire call at Yearwood Street, Cayon sometime after 2:00 a.m. where a wooden structure was fully engulfed in flames.

Everette Stapleton – a resident of Upper Cayon – explained to SKNVibes that he is constructing his home next to that which was on fire, and having received a call about the blaze he arrived there at about 3:00 a.m.

Stapleton said when he got to the scene he met fire-fighters working to extinguish the flames which had engulfed the unoccupied structure.

He further said that his incomplete house did not sustain much damage from the fire, except for a number of windows.

However, the container – filled with supplies to construct and furnish his home – which sat directly in front of the house that was on fire, was damaged during the blaze.

He explained that when he got to the scene he opened the container and “the fire blazed up inside” and burnt quite a number of its contents.

Stapleton informed that the destroyed two-bedroom wooden structure belongs to one “Bascom” who resides in St. Croix. He said he has made attempts at contacting him but they have been unsuccessful.

The container – SKNVibes understands – held tyres, pipes, fans, mattresses, appliances, power tools, books, among others, and when asked of the total value, Stapleton said it is more than US$100 000.

He said all he could do now is thank God that he has life and that there were no injuries resulting from the fire.

Stapleton indicated that he had begun the process of assessing the damage to his property and, after that is done, he would see how best he could continue the construction of his home.
