~~Adz:Right~~BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LAST WEEK Friday (Sept. 13) saw a number of persons being convicted of offences with which they were charged and fined as punishment for their wrong doings.
Tree Top Housing, Sandy Point resident Elston Phillip may think twice before stealing again, as he was sentenced to serve jail for larceny.
The young man appeared before the District “B” Magistrate’s Court after being arrested for stealing two cheques from Aaron Rogers of The Alley, Sandy Point. He was convicted and sentenced to serve eight months at Her Majesty’s Prison.
A father and son team, Millard Maynard and Kurtis Browne, appeared before the District “B” Magistrate’s Court on a charge of “beating Eddy Thompson of Tabernacle” and were both convicted. The Molyneaux residents were fined $1 000 each, which is to be paid within three months or, in default, serve one month imprisonment.
The offence was committed at Black Rocks on June 28, 2008.
For a February 13, 2008 careless driving offence, Ephraim Lalin Henderson of The Alley, Sandy Point was convicted and fined $1 000 to be paid within three months or he will face a two-month prison sentence.
Two other Sandy Pointers, Kerick Lewis and a juvenile were taken before the court for an August 7, 2008 offence of “stealing from Shanille Powell and Carmella Daniel from Camp Abraham” while at the Sandy Point Pre-School. Both were convicted and placed on a 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew for a three-month period. They are also to be in each other’s company for a six-month period and are to make payment of $879 each.
For the offence of “careless driving”, Boyd’s Villager Cortney Bollard was convicted and fined $800 to be paid within four months or serve one month imprisonment. The offence, according to police, was committed on May 16, 2008.
Two Old Road women, Melissa Merritt and Wendy Samuel, were convicted of and severely cautioned for beating Kishma Berkley of Old Road on April 21, 2008.
ARRESTS
Sometime this week, four individuals, who were arrested and charged last week, are expected to appear before the court.
La Guerite resident Cyril Brookes was arrested and charged with “possession of cannabis”, Antonio ‘Dollar’ Hutton of Cotton Ground, Nevis was arrested and charged with “larceny”, Michael Douglas of St. Pauls Village was arrested and charged with “larceny” and a Fort Tyson Rise, Frigate Bay juvenile was arrested and charged with “carrying abroad an offensive weapon”.
OPERATIONS CONDUCTED
It wasn’t all “fun and games” at ‘The Strip’ last Friday as police officers conducted a number of stop and search operations there and several persons who were found to be in violation of the traffic laws were ticketed.
According to a police press release, “a total of 65 persons and several vehicles were stopped and searched for illegal drugs, arms and ammunition and large quantities of cannabis were found on several individuals”.
The found items were taken into custody and “the individuals informed that they will be prosecuted”.
Fourteen tickets were issued to persons who were found to be in violation of the Federation’s Traffic Code.
