BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – BASSETERRE HIGH SCHOOL (BHS) has done it again! The school successfully defended it title in the Clash of the High Schools Championship following a stiff competition last evening (Nov. 3) at Carnival Village.

Washington Archibald High School (WAHS), the school that had dominated the competition for the first two years (2009-2010) but did not participate in 2011, failed to regain the title although it was adamant this year about winning.

The school placed second while the Immaculate Conception Catholic School (ICCS) placed third. The other participating schools were Cayon High School (CHS) and the Charles E. Mills Secondary School (CEMSS).

Each school competed in two rounds. The first round was themed ‘Something Worldwide’ and the students chose a country and showcased their culture in song and dance.

BHS represented Puerto Rico, WAHS chose England, ICCS represented Brazil, CHS represented India and CEMSS chose Zambezi, Africa.

The event was organised by Island Soul Entertainment (ISE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Empowerment.

Cheddi Bradshaw of ISE said that the competition has matured tremendously.

“I saw a lot of growth in the performances. A lot of fresh out the box ideas and I could see that schools went all out to please their supporters and to showcase how much talent they have,” he said.

Of the winning school, he said they were excellent and had “went all out”.

In a previous interview, Bradshaw said the purpose of the competition is to encourage youth empowerment and development.

“It is a way to expose their talent to the community, to show their skills and show there are still positive youths in the community.

“The competition has contributed to the self-esteem of young people, as they use it as one of the avenues to showcase their talents,” he added.
