CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - POMP and splendor characterised the activities that were held at Grove Park in Nevis on Thursday to mark 25 years since St. Kitts and Nevis were unchained from colonialism.
The Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry and Deputy Governor General Eustace John inspected a Guard of Honour and uniformed forces before the Premier delivered his speech at Grove Park.
The Premier praised Meritzer Williams and commended her for conducting herself with dignity when she represented St. Kitts and Nevis at the recently concluded Olympics held in Beijing, China.
Parry then thanked Sim Daniel, the pioneer Premier, for the many sacrifices he had made to develop Nevis. He also thanked Ivor Stevens who entered politics in 1956 and whose love for Nevis, the Premier stated, was unequalled. ~~Adz:Right~~
The Premier also showered Uhral Swanstan with praises for ably leading the Nevis Local Council and for ensuring the water and road systems were established and maintained, adding “he knew every pipeline and every road”.
Turning to Levi Morton’s contribution, Parry said Morton was so passionate about the well-being of Nevis that when he was asked to install speakers at Mt. Lily for a public meeting and nobody had turned up for a meeting, he spoke all night.
Hon. Parry spoke of Arthur Evelyn, another of Nevis’ stalwart, who had in his “calm and quiet” manner sacrificed for the island with determination.
The Premier told the youths to emulate the determination, integrity and honesty of pioneers who struggled for St. Kitts and Nevis to be free. He also appealed to them not to be distracted by American TV and to desist from using short-cuts to achieve success, noting that kind of success is short lived.
“Short-cuts do not pay. Crime does not pay,” he said and called on the youths to give up the guns they may be hiding. “Badness is out of style,” He said.
The Premier said all persons in Nevis could have access to employment if they desired to work, unlike many other parts of the world where there is unemployment. In the near future, he said, the envisaged geothermal energy would create affordable renewable energy and it would also create new industries and consequently beef-up Nevis’ Treasury.
