BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN a radio broadcast on Independence eve (Sep. 18), the Rotary Clubs of St. Kitts and Nevis announced the winner of their Independence Car Raffle organised in celebration of the Federation’s Silver Anniversary of Independence.

In a brief ceremony held immediately after the Prime Minister’s Independence Toast, President of the Rotary Club of St. Kitts Betty-Ann Gilbert handed over a brand new 2008 silver Toyota Corolla to Stedroy Pemberton, in absence of his son Kercer Pemberton of Hanley’s Road (Nevis), the lucky winner of the raffle.

Gilbert expressed her pleasure and excitement in handing over the keys to the winner, as a way of showing the tangible contributions made by the club to the Federation, noting the Rotary Clubs generate all of their finances from the public and various businesses.

“I am very pleased with the response of the general public toward the raffle. The entire raffle was successful; people were literally

We ran this project not only to celebrate the Silver Jubilee Independence Anniversary, but also to raise a significant amount money to finance our projects that we have for the rest of the year.”

Gilbert indicated that a silver car was chosen as it was symbolic of the Silver Jubilee Independence Anniversary and may be used to mark the significant milestone.

She thanked the government for granting duty-free concessions on the vehicle and for providing the Rotary Club with its support, which she claims “without which all this would not have been possible”.

She outlined a number of plans that are slated to be launched before the end of the year and would show the continued contributions to community development.

Gilbert explained that plans are on the front burner for the launch of a Children Development Foundation in November; an initiative of Past President Charles Wilkins to help teen mothers, troubled boys and the like.

“In Rotary, our focus this year is on children as we focus on our international theme, ‘Make dreams real for children’.

We are seeking the assistance of the Ministry of Education to allow us to adopt a school and do hands-on work there. Also, school-needs assessment would be undertaken to see how best we can help the particular school,” said Gilbert.  ~~Adz:Right~~
