Mosquito Fogging Scheduled for Next Week

~~Adz:Right~~ Roadtown, Tortola- Barring bad weather, Government will conduct fogging for mosquitoes in West End early next week.  Programme Manager for Vector Control in the Environmental Health Department Mr. Minchington Israel said fogging will be done in Locality 6, which runs from Carrot Bay to Smuggler’s Cove, between the hours of 5:30 and 7:30 a.m., on Monday, 22 September.

Locality 5 which includes areas between Frenchman’s Cay, Soper’s Hole and Towers will be fogged between 6 and 8 p.m., on that day.

The Programme Manager for Vector Control said the schedule may be interrupted at short notice due to rain or high winds. However he assured residents that the schedule will remain effective until the mentioned areas have been completely fogged.

Mr. Israel also urged residents of the targeted communities to open their house windows and doors to allow the mist inside, during the fogging. “Considering that we are still in the hurricane season and that additional rainfall is expected in the coming months, householders are urged to participate in the mosquito control efforts,” he told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

Mr. Israel reminded the public that fogging will only provide temporary relief and called on householders and property owners to remain vigilant in order to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in stagnant water in and around their homes and workplaces.

Steps that residents may take to reduce mosquito breeding include covering all cistern inlets from the roofs and overflow pipes with window screen material; keeping house plants and flowers in damp soil instead of water; keeping flower pot saucers dry by avoiding over-watering potted plants; and repairing leaky pipes and outdoor faucets.

The Vector Control Unit is connected with the Environmental Health Division and falls under the Ministry of Health and Social Development.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development works to provide leadership that promotes health, social well-being, and a safe environment as positive resources for living and sustainable development. Among other things, the Ministry is responsible for safeguarding and promoting the health and social development of the Territory.
