Two vehicles collide on F. T. Williams Highway; driver suffers minor injuries

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ACCIDENTS that occurred yesterday (Nov. 13) have motivated the Traffic Department to once again issue a stern reminder to motorists to use the highways and byways of the island with caution and to observe as well as obey traffic laws.

Shortly before noon yesterday, a young man from the Prickly Pear Alley tragically lost his life after a garbage collection truck on which he travelled overturned, crushing him.

Just hours before that, a two-vehicle accident took place along the F.T. Williams Highway and although the injuries sustained were minor, the situation could have panned out far different than it did.

Inspector Cromwell Henry of the Traffic Department told SKNVibes that the incident occurred at about 8:10 a.m. and involved motor pickup PA413 – driven by Hugh Rogers of Lamberts – and P6030 driven by Onchie Obada of Frigate Bay.

Henry said the information he received suggested that P6030 was travelling towards Camps and, while in the vicinity of the back of the Defence Force Camp, the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with PA413 which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The Inspector reported that Obada was taken to the Joseph N. France General Hospital where he was treated for lacerations to his face and was subsequently discharged.

He said road safety is of paramount importance to the Department and it is equally important that motorists too understand that.

Neglecting those laws that persons may deem simple, such as obeying the speed limit, ensuring that all lights on their vehicle are functional before operation and driving in accordance with road conditions, can lead to unwanted ends.

As Inspector Henry explained, to make the streets safer, all “must” be aware of traffic rules and regulations and commit themselves to abide wholeheartedly by them.

And failure to comply – Henry reminded – would result in penalties being imposed as prescribed by law.
