BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (FEBRUARY 23RD 2004) – St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas is among top regional officials down to address the first international AIDS conference to be held in the Dominican Republic.
“As a physician and a political leader who has been instrumental in marshalling Caribbean-wide efforts to address HIV/AIDS, your participation your participation would be most welcome,” said Chair of the International Planning Committee, Daisy Gely.
She said Prime Minister Douglas’ “leadership in the fight against AIDS in the Caribbean serves as an inspiration.”
Gely said the “Multicultural Caribbean United Against HIV/AIDS” from March 5th to 7th, is expected to attract over 1500 participants from every country or island in the Caribbean and will be conducted in English, Dutch, French and Spanish.
Also scheduled to speak are the President of the Dominican Republic, His Excellency Hipolito Meja; United States Virgin Islands Delegate to Congress, Mrs. Donna Christian-Christiansen; First Lady of the Dominican Republic, Mrs. Rosa de Mejia; First Lady of Haiti, Mrs. Mildred Trouillot-Aristide; Director of Centres GHESKIO in Haiti and Professor of Medicine at Weid Medical College, Cornell University, Dr.. Jean William Pape.
The Conference goals include heightening the awareness of HIV-and AIDS related issues in the region, disseminating the latest research and fostering collaboration and communication throughout the Caribbean.
Topics to be presented and discussed include treatment, care and support for people with HIV or AIDS; mother to child transmission of the disease; stigma and discrimination; immigration and migration issues; drug resistance and vaccine research; women’s issues and the economic impact of HIV and AIDS.
It is sponsored by the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC) in collaboration with the Office of AIDS Research, National Institutes of Health and the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
Participants are expected from Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, St. Baths, St. Martin, Haiti, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten, Turks and Caicos Islands, the British Virgin Islands, the United States Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Suriname and St. Kitts and Nevis. |
