BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young lady, said to be in her late teens, is being counted as fortunate, having survived a traffic accident that resulted in her being struck by a vehicle.

The incident occurred just about five minutes before 10:00 last evening (Nov. 17) in the Buckley’s area, involving motorcar P9422 and pedestrian Ophelia McHayla of Buckley’s Estate.

SGT Calvin Amory of the Traffic Department informed SKNVibes that, according to information he received, the motor vehicle was being operated by Erica Rouse of St. Paul’s when the incident occurred.

He further informed that it was travelling east along the Island’s Main Road and when it got in the vicinity of the Caribbean Cinemas a collision occurred between it and McHayla, who was attempting to cross the road from the southern side.

The Emergency Medical Services was summoned to the scene and McHayla was transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital where she is said to have been warded in stable condition.

Crime Scene Technicians and officers of the Traffic Department were also summoned to the scene which was processed and preliminary enquiries launched.

This publication understands that the victim sustained injuries to her head and both feet, while the vehicle’s front windshield was smashed and the bonnet dented.

“We are appealing to both motorists and pedestrians to use the roads responsibly, especially during the evening when the benefit of the sun is absent. Motorists should always be on the lookout for pedestrians and pedestrians must always be on the lookout for oncoming traffic. Both groups have a responsibility to ensure that they do their part in promoting road safety,” Amory expressed.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
