BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, 19th November 2012: Two International observances will be highlighted this week, “The International Day of Child Abuse Prevention on November 19th”and “Universal Children’s Day,” on 20th of November. The International Day against Child Abuse aims to create a culture of prevention around the world by encouraging governments and community organizations to play more active roles in protecting children.
To emphasize the rights of the child to be protected and loved, November 20, 2012, Universal Children’s Day, is being acknowledged as the World Day of Prayer of Action for Children. In celebrating this day, the theme for the next five years is End Violence against Children.
Preventing child abuse and neglect will take all of our efforts; from policy-makers to parents, to ensure our children have the foundation to become tomorrow‘s leaders. The family is the pivotal unit that must create a pedestal on which to place our children. Children are our future and communities, as the extended family, must look out for their welfare.
The Week’s activities includes presentations in schools, hosting of children by Parliamentarians, in schools, mentoring of children by political ministers, business owners and NGOs, and meetings with school officials, parents and mandatory reporters.
Department officials will make appearances on IREP 869 and On The Step Television Programmes. The general public is also invited to an open house at the Department on an on Friday 23rd November. The week of activities concludes with a Fun Day for foster families and a church service.
Information and support is available to make communities strong and safe. Contact Probation & Child Protection Services or the Counseling Center for information on how to prevent child abuse, where to go to get help with parenting skills, and what to do if you suspect a child is in danger.
