BRADES, Montserrat, November 19th, 2012 – A full account of the Montserrat Oriole (Icterus oberi), a critically endangered endemic bird was recently published on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology Neotropical Birds website.
The collection and analysis of the data for this publication was a collaborative effort between the Montserrat Department of Environment, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Local contributors were messrs James “Scriber” Daley and Calvin Fenton.
The species account gives a description of the oriole and an overview of its life history. It also includes information about the bird’s distribution throughout the forests in Montserrat, particularly the Centre Hills. The feature also discusses the conservation efforts that are being employed and the need for continued research.
The narrative highlighted priorities for future research which include the impact of fragmented forests on oriole populations and the survival rate of juvenile birds.
