BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS part of its Membership Growth Month, the St. Kitts Basseterre Leo Club started an awareness drive to sensitise the general public to the objectives and benefits of being a member of the organisation.

President of St. Kitts Basseterre Leo Club Donelle Caines, in speaking to SKNVibes, said in keeping with the Club’s tradition of recognising October as Membership Growth Month, the group is informing the public about its operations in an effort to recruit new members into the Club.

He explained that the Club is a non-profit humanitarian organisation which seeks to provide youth an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community.

In outlining the many contributions to community development, Caines said, “We, through our elderly programme, have adopted an elderly Newtown resident who we take care of; we buy his groceries, donate household items and visit him frequently.

We usually keep a party at the Children’s Home in order to interact with the young people there, and we also donate gifts to less

“Two of most recent projects focus on literacy: our Leos for Literacy programme donated hundreds of software, based on Math, Spanish, Dictionary Skills, Phonics and Basic Reading, to various primary schools; and we are presently raising funds for the newly established Adult Literacy Centre of the CFB College.

Both efforts are geared toward equipping institutions to effectively satisfy basic literacy and numeracy needs.

We also adopted the Newton Ground Primary School in which we recently established a Most Improved Student Award to acknowledge students who have shown the most progress in their senior years of primary school.”

President Caines stressed the need for more youth to consider joining such an organisation, as it could instil in them commitment to helping others.

~~Adz:Left~~ He added that this builds character and lends to one’s holistic development. He further stated that the group provides an ideal opportunity for youth to channel their energies into positive avenues while at the same time, challenge themselves to be devoted to make meaningful contributions to the society.

He indicated that the Club gives a hands-on approach to address issues including poverty, crime, literacy, and communicable and non-communicable diseases in order to promote Leadership, Experience and Opportunities.

On October 11, the St. Kitts Basseterre Leo Club will be hosting an Open House, one of the highlights of the month, at Diamond Cut Steakhouse (formerly known as Sugar Bay Club), where it wishes to appeal to students from the CFB College and the general community, who are interested in community development, to join the group. Presentations of past and present Leo projects will be on display.
