CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - IN keeping with this year’s International Coastal Clean-up, participants of the one-day exercise on Nevis collected litter from 20 beaches on the island on Saturday, September 20.

This year’s activities were held in honor of the late Lincoln Hoffman who died recently, and it was coordinated by Miriam Knorr.

A cross-section of participants interviewed are disappointed that people continue to litter the beaches instead of acknowledging the numerous awareness campaigns.

“We believed that behind every piece of litter is a face,” Knorr told participants as they seemingly enjoyed a well-deserved luncheon at the newly re-opened restaurant, The Pub.

The laws of St. Kitts and Nevis prohibit littering but participants feel the law has not been aggressively enforced.

Last year, participants collected 4,340 pounds of litter from an 8.7 miles strip along the beaches.

Most of the litter is through human activities such as garbage generated from fast foods, garbage generated during entertainment events as well as from storms and drains.

Arthur Anslyn, who collected litter from under the sea, said he did not find as much litter as was found on the shores.

He said the clean under water may be as a result of the recent storms that may have brought the garbage to the shore. He also noted that erosion may have covered the garbage. ~~Adz:Left~~
