Members of SCASPA, KM Services and the St. Kitts Co-operative Credit Union unveil the recently landscaped airport roundabout
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts-AT a brief ceremony this morning (Sept. 24) executive members of the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) officially unveiled their combined effort with the St. Kitts Co-operative Credit Union to beautify the roundabout near the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport.

The EC $67,000 dollar project was undertaken by SCASPA and the Credit Union for a number of reasons including celebrating SCASPA’s 15th anniversary this month, the Federation’s 25th year of Independence and to provide a quality image for visitors.

“For many of our visitors this roundabout is the first and last contact point with St. Kitts-Nevis. SCASPA is the gateway to the nation, and so it is very important for sustainability that we have on display a product that is second to none,” Errol Douglas, General Manager for SCASPA, told media at the ceremony.

Landscaping on the roundabout was undertaken by KM Services of St. Kitts, and features Royal palms, Christmas palms and a host of other native plants that have been locally grown.     ~~Adz:Right~~

Despite the large amount of work already completed on the beautification project, SCASPA Chairman Linkon Maynard made it clear that the roundabout was a “work in progress”.

“I envisage that in the future we will be able to use the roundabout to display some of our national heritage and artwork,” he said before describing a possible welcome mural or monument to the sugar industry using materials from the old sugar factory located nearby.

Maynard made a call to local creative artists to submit their ideas to SCASPA so the roundabout could be further enhanced and become a source of national pride.

Continuing on the note of national pride, he said the general public would play a major role in keeping the area free from litter, stray animals and the prevention of theft of plants.

“We will do whatever is necessary to guard what we have done here, and I hope the public will give their full cooperation on this matter.”

The SCASPA officials indicated that the roundabout beautification project was a “sign of our willingness to partner with any of the stakeholders in St. Kitts-Nevis”, and that future partnerships by the organisation with local sponsors may include the expansion of the airport terminal and the building of a “fixed base of operations” for private jets visiting the Federation’s high-end tourism product.
