BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FINANCE OFFICER in the Ministry of Education Glen Amory told SKNVibes, during an exclusive interview on September 24, that schools on both islands have received a great deal of help from the Caribbean Development Bank funded Basic Education Project.

He mentioned that in Nevis, the Charlestown Secondary School, Gingerland High School and the Special Education Unit all profited from the programme, while in St. Kitts, Sandy Point, St. Paul’s and Irishtown Primary Schools and Cayon and Basseterre High Schools received similar assistance.

Amory further stated that the programme’s latest project was the EC$1.36M expansion and refurbishment of the science laboratories at the Sandy Point High School.    ~~Adz:Right~~

He added that the project is being done by Lefco Construction and Equipment Rental out of Nevis, which started operation in late July 2008 and expects to have the building completely refurbished by early 2009.

In speaking to Lorozine Williams, Principal of the Sandy Point High School, she openly expressed her pleasure in the school being able to get assistance for what she describes as a job that has been long awaited.

“It is indeed a welcomed addition to the school compound. The renovation and refurbishment of the science labs were well needed for quite some time and I am extremely happy that it has come to fruition. The building is expected to house the Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Agricultural and Integrated Science Laboratories along with the new Language and Music Labs and additional classrooms.

“The men are working, and they are doing a very good job. So we are hoping that by the end of this school term [December 2008] some of the classes will be made available so that we will be able to use them for the next school term [January 2009].”

The Principal further stated that the new labs are valuable additions, as she indicated that the relative Departments have already been planning additional programmes to ensure they are well-developed and to encourage students to be attracted to the particular areas of study.
