Remedial Work on CAC Progressing Smoothly

~~Adz:Right~~ Roadtown, Tortola- The remedial work on the Central Administration Complex (CAC) which includes the installation of a new chiller is progressing smoothly.

The chiller, which forms an integral part of the air quality improvement and will improve the cooling capacity of the air conditioning system in the CAC, arrived in the Territory late July and has since been installed along with two new chiller pumps.

The project also entails the replacement of the building’s roofing system and Project Manager of the Air Quality Improvement Project, Mr. John Penn told the Department of Information and Public Relations the tender document that was submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers for vetting was received earlier this week.

“After the changes requested by the Attorney General Chambers are made, the document will be sent to the Procurement Unit of the Ministry of Finance for publication in local newspapers. The invitation to tenders will be open to all qualified roofing contractors, specifically those certified in the installation of siplast, parapro roof membrane system, the system that was specified by the project architects Mendez Brunner Badillo and Associates, to replace the current roofing system,” Mr. Penn said.

After the project has been tendered and a qualified contractor chosen, the work on the roof will entail removal of the existing material and replacing it with the siplast roofing system, which will take approximately four months.

Another aspect of the project is the general clean up of the facility. “We are presently working with the mechanical engineer to complete the air conditioning and sprinkler system mechanical drawings. Upon receipt of the drawings, we will commence the preparation of the tender document for the general clean-up,” Mr. Penn added.

The lightning protection system, which is necessary to protect the electrical system in the building in the event of a lightning strike, will be re-installed.  Currently, the lightning protecting system is not functioning as a result of damage caused by previous hurricanes and the general wear and tear of the 15-year old building.

In addition to the replacement of the chiller and lightning protection system, works will include replacement of the ceiling grid and tiles, installation of energy efficient lighting fixtures, replacement of all air conditioning ducts, improved controls on the air conditioning system, and the replacement of all carpeting in the building.

The Ministry of Communications and Works remains dedicated and committed to ensuring that the air quality at the Central Administration Complex meets applicable international industry standards for buildings of this type.
