Second escapee captured, burglar on the lam
    Officials point finger at guards

St. Croix, USVI – Convicted murder, 33-year-old Carlos Burgos was apprehended without incident on Sunday evening (Sept. 21) after he escaped the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility between Friday night and early Saturday morning.

Burgos was one of three escapees; the youngest, 19-year-old Edwardo Carmona Jr. was shot and killed by police officers as he attempted to evade capture in the Mon Bijou area on Saturday night. He too was a convicted murderer serving a life sentence but was also serving two 4-year sentences for gun crimes.

Tips phoned in to the police alerted them to Burgos’ whereabouts at the abode of Liz Brache in the Bethlehem Village housing community and police have since charged the 30-year-old mother with accessory to the escape. She faces up to 5 years in prison if convicted.

Burgos is looking at another 10 years being tacked onto his sentence for his jail break.  ~~Adz:Right~~

The third inmate, 28-year-old Derrick Fredericks, who is said to have made a career of escaping police custody, remains at large. Fredericks was serving a 5-year sentence for burglary. The $10,000 reward for information leading to his capture remains in effect.

An investigation into the jail break was launched and the Facility placed on lock down. On Monday, Attorney General Vincent Frazer blamed the escape on ‘failures on the part of Corrections officers guarding that section of the prison’.

It was reported in the VI Daily News that investigators are looking into the possibility that guards may have intentionally allowed the escape. It was reported that Acting St. Croix Police Chief Oakland Benta said that “Police have reason to believe they had help from staff, because if proper procedures were followed, it wouldn't have happened.”

According to reports in the local media, investigations have revealed that each inmate embedded a toothpaste tube cap in their cell doors to prevent them locking.
