COURT CONVICTIONS
The Federation’s courts continue to endeavour to send strong messages to persons who insist on running afoul of the law.
One of the most recent messages sent was at the District “C” Magistrate’s Court where Asim Parris of Stoney Grove appeared.
He was charged with the offences of “possession of cannabis”, “resisting arrest” and “obstruction” and was convicted of all counts.
Parris was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment on the first charge, six months on the second and six months on the third charge. All sentences are to run consecutively.
Lavern Duporte of Green Tree Housing Project, St. Kitts, has the next three months to come up with $5 000; a fine which was handed to her upon conviction of “possession of cannabis”.
She too appeared before the District “C” Magistrate’s Court. Should she fail to pay the sum within the prescribed time, a six-month custodial sentence would be imposed.
East Street, Newtown resident Janelle Johnson was placed on a $1 000 two-year bond to be of good behaviour and to keep the peace as punishment for a December 23, 20077 offence of “causing malicious damage”. He is also to stay at least 100 feet away from Shermel Cumberbatch, the individual whose property she damaged.
Failure to abide by the conditions of the bond would result in Johnson having to serve a custodial sentence or paying the sum.
After being convicted of three September 15, 2008 counts of “malicious damage”, Javier Gomez of Ocean View was ordered to pay $2 430 compensation before September 29, 2008 or face a 14-day prison sentence per count.
For the offence of “making use of threatening language”, Jermaine Adonis Dasent of Greenlands was convicted and placed on a two-year bond to be of good behaviour and keep the peace.
He is to also stay away from Mildred Queeley, the individual whom he threatened. If he breaks the bond, he would be sent to jail or fined.

Kevin Jeffers of Lime Kiln Project has one week to come up with $800, which is the sum he was fined after being convicted of “making use of insulting language”. The offence was committed on August 4, 2008.
MARIJUANA PLANTS UPROOTED
Though not as significant as in times past, the Police Force has continued to see success in ridding the Federation of illegal substances.
According to a police press release, recently, they “conducted search operations in the Hermitage area in Cayon and 15 marijuana plants were found growing on a plot of land. The plants, which ranged in height from five inches to two feet, were uprooted and taken into custody. No one was arrested for the find.”
