HFLE curriculum to be launched in primary schools

By: EMU, Press Release

(EMU) – St. Kitts, Nov 31, 2012 --  Health and Family Life Education is expected to be launched in primary schools come January 2013.

Primary School teachers from Grades Three to Six were exposed to training to prepare them to deliver the Health and Family Life Curriculum at the start of the new school term in January.

Self and Interpersonal Relationships as well as Sexuality and Sexual Health will comprise the first two modules which will be taught to the students.

Senior Education Officer, Dr. Tricia Esdaille, told the Education Media Unit that the Ministry took the decision to teach the subject at the primary school level given the increased awareness and exposure of children at this age to such information from other sources. She added that this would give students a chance to discuss such topics openly and to be more aware of their choices and the consequences.

Dr. Esdaille added that it would also assist in helping to create a basis for family discussions regarding what can be very awkward topics for parents to address.

A number of training sessions took place within the November 12-22 period for groups of teachers from Grades 3-4 and 5-6.

Areas  What it means to be an HFLE Teacher, Regional Standards and Core Outcomes, Teaching Methods and Assessment and Evaluation, Interpersonal Relationships, Sexuality and Sexual Health as well as Lesson Delivery Practice.
