One brother pleads guilty to wounding with intent

Her Majesty’s Prison on Cayon Street, Basseterre

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - WHEN one is guilty of a crime and chooses to stand trial in an attempt to be set free but is instead given a guilty verdict, at sentencing one is usually hit with harsh punishments; most times, the maximum sentence.

However, a mandatory one third sentence reduction is given with a guilty plea, resulting in less time being spent in prison.

This may have been Kasper Rouse’s perception; for just before his trial began he stood and changed his plea to guilty.

Kapser and his brother Kenville Rouse, both of Fortlands, Basseterre, were jointly charged with the unlawful wounding and wounding with intent of 28-year-old Gregory 'Webber' Mills.

The offence was committed on September 16, 2010.

The incident reportedly took place at about 6:00 a.m. in the vicinity of the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services (SKNFRS) in Basseterre.

The Rouse brothers' trial was scheduled to begin yesterday (Dec. 3), but when the jury selection was over Kasper made the change in plea.

The case has since been adjourned and Kenville would be tried at a later date.

Kasper is now residing at Her Majesty's Prison awaiting his sentencing hearing, while Kenville is out on bail.

Kasper is expected to be sentenced sometime later in the Assizes following the completion of his Social Inquiry Report.
