BRADES, Montserrat, December 5th, 2012 – Director of the Disaster Management Coordination Agency (DMCA) Billy Darroux is this week attending the 7th Annual Conference on Comprehensive Disaster Management at the Hilton Rose Hall Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

The conference organised by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), brings together disaster managers, emergency planners, donor group representatives, sector leads and political and policy level delegates to review and plan activities in relation to Comprehensive Disaster management in the region.

The theme for this conference is “Building Disaster Resilience, a shared responsibility”. Sectors represented include Health, Agriculture and Food Security, Economic Planning, Emergency Communication, Community resilience and IT in emergency management.

Montserrat is also represented by the Deputy Health Disaster Coordinator Violet Brown, GIS Manager Lavern Rogers Ryan and Youth representative Ajahnii Lewis.

Participants will engage regional and international counterparts to discuss best practices in the myriad of disciplines that makes disaster management a comprehensive national issue.

Mr. Darroux spent Monday reviewing the Regional Risk Reduction Initiative, R3i where he presented on Montserrat’s activities and benefits from the project.

Speaking from Jamaica, Darroux said “the underlying message from donor reps is that Governments must integrate risk reduction into development programs, and that further funding can only be encouraged by positive results.”

He also jointly presented a poster with UNDP R3i Project Manager Alexandre Vacher of the UNDP Barbados Office entitled “R3i, a community of disaster managers”. He is expected to engage in discussion during the many plenary and personal development sessions.

Montserrat, along with St. Maarten, Aruba and Anguilla were the pilot countries for the R31 project.
