~~Adz:Right~~ BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A 27-year-old man was sentenced to perform hard labour at Her Majesty’s Prison after pleading guilty to a March 2, 2007 offence of “house breaking and larceny”.

Last Tuesday at the Basseterre High Court, Kevin Bergan pleaded guilty to the charge and was returned today (Sept. 29) for his sentencing hearing.

According to the particulars of the case, Leonora Bourne of West Farm secured her home on February 2, 2007 and went to England leaving the premises in the care of her neighbours for approximately one month.

Sometime during her absence, one of her neighbours checked the house and discovered that a window was broken and the house rummaged. When Bourne returned to the island on March 5, 2007, she discovered that US$200 was taken from the bedroom.

A police report was made and investigations led to Bergan’s arrest. Further details of the incident indicate that Bergan admitted to the police that he committed the offence.

While standing before His Lordship Justice Francis Belle, Bergan offered no explanation for committing the offence but told the court that at the time of the incident, he was a worker at RAMS, Bird Rock, where he packed containers that were to be sent to Nevis.

Justice Belle sentenced the man to 18 months with hard labour and informed that he was lenient because Bergan pleaded guilty to the charge, therefore foregoing wasting the court’s time and because it was his first offence on record.

Bergan was taken to Her Majesty’s Prison to begin serving his sentence.
