16 Calypsonians make it to Semi-finals

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SIXTEEN calypsonians, including two females, have successfully made the ‘cut’ following back-to-back nights of tent eliminations which ended last night (Nov. 9) shortly before 12 midnight at 17 Degrees on Victoria Road.

     

    The names of the Semi-finalists were announced by the Chairman of the National Carnival Committee Sylvester Anthony, who also chairs the Calypso Committee. 

     

    The  Semi-finalists are the Mighty Take Over with 242 points, Graig (234), Big Lice (232), Rudder (230), Socrates (229), Pungwah (226), Ace (224),  Bra Bread (219), Lady Diva (217),  I-Soursop (213), King Astro (212),  Singing Jackie (211), Forrest (205), Lord Kut (202), Allamuloo (202), King Godfrey (197) and Frankie Sly with 195 points who is an alternate.

     

    These calypsonians are scheduled to partake in the Semi-finals on Sunday (Dec. 16) at the Sugar Mill located at Warner Park at 4:00 p.m., and they are expected to perform two songs.

     

    Twenty-six calypsonians from the Proud Sounds and Legends Kaiso Tents participated in the second round of the Eliminations and both tents provided musical accompaniment before a relatively large crowd.

     

    Calypso Reggie emceed the Proud Sounds Tent while Sandra B did the same for the Legends Kaiso Tent.

     

    The show was conducted with each tent taking a round and the two emcees lived up to expectations, as they had they audience in ‘stitches’ with their unique style of jokes and crowd interaction.

     

    For the Elimination rounds, the calypsonians were judged on the following: LYRICS - Expression of Theme (5 points), Word Craft (15 points), Lyrics (5 points) and Creativity (5 points); MUSIC - Melody (15 points), Arrangement (10 points) and Originality (5 points); PERFORMANCE - Rendition (15 points), Presentation (10 points) and Demonstration (5 points).

     

    The first Elimination round was held on Saturday (Nov. 7) at De House Nitery on Cayon Street.

     

    The calypsonians who were backed last night by the Proud Sounds Tent areand their songs were as follows:

     

    In Round One at last night’s Elimination were King Zarky singing ‘A tell me Friend, Queen Kibbie with ‘We Bonding’, Quantash with ‘Agriculture’, Polo did a song called ‘Don't Mek Me Sing’, while Shango sang one called ‘Rey Rey’ and Joshua followed with ‘De Doctor One’. 

     

    In Round Two, Charisma sang ‘Proud to be a Kittitian’, Lord Black did one called ‘Land for Debt’, Bra Bread sang ‘Where do we go from Here?’, Zinette with ‘Our Children’, Big Lice with his popular ‘Ask De PM’, De Unexpected with his witty ‘Economic Paradise’ and  Lord Matt dished out one called ‘Dey Crazy’.

     

    They were all from the Proud Sounds Tent.

     

    In Round One for contestants from the Legends Kaiso Tent were Mr. Ma goo who sang one called ‘Who am I?’, Gazer’s rendition was called ‘How Come’, Aidoni with ‘Country Above Self’, Jungle Lion roared a piece named ‘National Pride’, Lil Willie dished out one called ‘40:40 was a waste a Time’ and Graig told the audience ‘No Sacrifice No Change’.
     
    Round Two saw Jenifer with ‘A Vision’, Socrates talking about ‘Gang Rape’, Watusi said ‘People still Crying’, Astro did one ‘Just for Kim’, Allamuloo told his audience to ‘Look what they have Done’ and Brother Walrick Mathew warned them that ‘Jesus is Coming’.
