BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (FEBRUARY 23RD 2004) – St. Kitts is the venue for the 29th Annual Conference of the Caribbean Studies Association (CSA).
President of the CSA, Sandy Point-born Kittitian Professor at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), Dr. Frank Mills said the May 31st to June 5th conference will be held at the Royal St. Kitts Marriott Beach Resort at Frigate Bay.
He said some 350 CSA members from overseas and another 50 local residents are expected to attend the Conference, which has as its theme, “Prospects and Options for the Transformation of the Caribbean in the 21st Century.”
St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas has been invited to address the opening session on Monday 31st May.
Dr. Douglas, an honorary member of the CSA, has also been invited to participate as a member of a panel to discuss the topic: “Prospects and Options for the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.”
Other members of the panel include Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Vance Amory and Former Governor of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, Sir Fred Phillips. An eminent Caribbean journalist expected to complete the panel.
Dr. Mills, in his Presidential Address on the morning of Wednesday 2nd June, is expected to discuss how current immigration patterns might transform the Caribbean.
A plenary session on the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) is expected to be held before the conference ends.
The CSA is a professional society whose aim is to foster contact, communication and cooperation among scholars in the study of Caribbean affairs and Caribbean people.
It was at the 26th Annual Caribbean Studies Association (CSA) Conference in Dutch St. Maarten that Prime Minister Douglas, who was the featured speaker, was given the Ghandi-King-Ikeda Peace Award. |
