BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young and energetic calypsonian and Soca artiste last year made big ‘waves’ in the Federation and surprised the nation when he won the Power Soca Monarch Competition and also made it to the Finals of the National Calypso Monarch Competition.
He is Orin Roberts, popularly known in the calypso arena as the Mighty Takeover.
In an exclusive interview with SKNVibes, the former four-time Junior Calypso King said that he is confident of greater success this year during the Carnival celebrations.
Takeover indicated that, so far, the Carnival season has been very hectic for him. He explained that he is a member of the Grand Masters Lime Proud Sound Band while, at the same time, competing under that Calypso Tent and preparing for the Soca Monarch Competition.
Asked to comment on his level of confidence in gaining more success in this year’s competitions, Takeover said, “I would like to be confident,” noting he feels that he has the material to follow up on the successes he experienced in 2011.
He has so far released two songs for the competitions; ‘Don’t Need Much’ for the Groovy Soca and ‘Pirates Nest’ for the National Calypso Monarch Competition.
Takeover stated that he does not have any projections for Carnival but promised to perform to the best of his ability “and take it wherever it goes from there”.
He added that following the surprises he made in 2011, the public would be paying more attention to him and he would definitely have to live up to his fans’ expectation.
The young calypsonian says that audiences around the Federation have gravitated well to his new songs and the response has been superb.
Takeover declared that his greatest achievement so far as a calypsonian are the crowns he won as a junior calypsonian and in the academic arena, his greatest achievement is that of gaining a Master’s degree in Banking and Financing at the UWI.
He added that his biggest achievement as a Soca artiste is his triumph in the 2011 Power Soca Monarch Competition.
