Fire Safety Awareness Week to be Observed Next Week

Roadtown, Tortola- The BVI Fire and Rescue Service Department will be celebrating Fire Safety Awareness Week in the Territory from October 5-12 under the theme, “Fire Prevention: Our Intention 2008.”

The week of activities will open with a church service at the New Life Baptist Church, Duff’s Bottom, on Sunday, October 5 at 10 a.m. followed by a luncheon at the Mariner Inn Restaurant located at The Moorings.  The day will end with a grand motorcade from Baugher’s Bay to Road Town and the surrounding areas beginning at   3 p.m.

Other activities planned for the week include a Cadet Training Programme for fourth and fifth form students, fire drills and fire extinguisher training, sporting events and a health walk.

There will also be free installation of child passenger seats by a certified fire officer.  Parents are encouraged to telephone the department to set up an installation appointment.  The week will also include a daily radio quiz for children on ZBVI’s  “Morning Devotions.”   The department will also be featured on Government’s Public Eye live call-in television programme on Thursday, October 2.

Fire Safety Awareness Week is held annually to give fire officers an opportunity to display their skills and firemen’s wares, which are used to save lives, protect property from destruction by fire and render humanitarian services.
