    Court convictions, three jailed

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WHILE three persons convicted over the past several days were sentenced to serve custodial sentences, others have been ordered to pay a combined sum of approximately EC$40 000 as chastisement for their unlawful activities.

     

    For the offence of “escaping lawful custody”, Audington Syder of Basseterre was convicted and sentenced to serve a three-month custodial sentence. The offence was committed on May 13, 2008.

     

    Craddock Road, Nevis resident Clinton Thompson appeared before the District “C” Magistrate’s Court on a charge of “wounding” and was convicted and sentenced to serve six years in prison.

     

    A hefty $30 000 fine was handed down to East Street, Basseterre resident Davil Battice after he was convicted of “possession of cannabis”, “possession of cocaine” and “possession with intent to supply”. The sum is to be paid within four months and if he fails to pay within the prescribed time, a two-year custodial sentence would be imposed.

     

    After appearing before the District “A” Magistrate’s Court on a charge of “malicious damage”, Javier Gomez of Ocean View was convicted and fined $3 750, which was to have been paid forthwith or in default, serve one month imprisonment. The offence was committed on September 15, 2008.

     

    A $2 000 fine was handed down to David Penny of Lower Shaw Avenue who was convicted of a “possession of cannabis” offence. Failure to pay the fine would result in the imposition of a three-month custodial sentence.  ~~Adz:Right~~

     

    At the District “B” Magistrate’s Court Evan Daniel of Parson’s Village was convicted of “making use of threatening language”, “resisting arrest” and “battery on police”, and on the last charge he was fined $1 200 to be paid within three months or serve one month imprisonment.  He was however severely cautioned on the other two offences.

     

    Tandra Fyfield of Buckley’s Estate is currently in prison serving a one-month sentence for “making use of threatening language”.  He was convicted of another such offence and was fined $1 000, which is to be paid within one month or if in default a one-month custodial sentence will be imposed.

     

    Conviction of a “possession of cannabis” offence resulted in John Mills of Cotton Ground, Nevis being fined $1 000 to be paid within six months or serve six months imprisonment.

     

    Within the next three months, Fitzroy Hobson of Gingerland has to come up with $800, which is the fine handed to him following his conviction of “driving without due care and attention”.

     

    “Permitting another to drive without being the holder of a valid and unexpired licence” and “permitting another to drive without insurance” are the charges brought against Leonore Dore of Bath Village. She was convicted and “severely cautioned” on the latter charge and fined $500 on the former.

     

    Bath Villager Jesse Nisbett was also “severely cautioned” after being convicted of “driving without insurance” and “driving without a valid and unexpired licence”.
