SCASPA donates computer to Boys Home

~~Adz:Left~~ BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN celebration of its 15th Anniversary and in keeping with its commitment to community development, the St. Christopher Air and Sea Port Authority (SCASPA) donated a HP flat screen computer with free internet service to the Save Our Sons Boys Interim Home (SOS) on Friday, September 26.

SOS, situated in Sandy Point, was established in 2005 as a church effort undertaken by the Unique Touch Christian Centre and is a home for troubled boys who may have suffered from the effects of poverty and family instability.

Lornlia Matthew, Marketing Public Relations Officer of the SCASPA, told SKNVibes that the donation was done in collaboration with Cable and Wireless to provide the free internet service and was a part of the organisation’s community-oriented projects for its 15th Anniversary celebrations.

She added that the effort was to make a tangible donation to the community as a way of strengthening the company’s role in community development.

Matthew informed that the SOS Boys Interim Home was chosen because the SCASPA had learnt of the “great social work that is being done through this project” and thought it would be the most ideal contribution rather than investing in social groups that “already receive a lot of aid”.

“It takes a community to raise a child, and so, our contribution may help in raising these boys. Recently, we’ve had upsurge in juvenile delinquency, but, with this computer, the boys there at the home would be able to direct their energy in a positive way,” Matthew said.

Director of the SOS Boys Interim Home Pastor Clive Saunders expressed his pleasure in receiving the computer and noted that “it shows that people are seeing what is happening; they appreciate it and they want to help”.

“This donation is very timely. In fact, the home [SOS] had been in need of a computer for quite some time. This would help greatly in shaping the boys’ computer skills and would allow them to do research. Some of the boys are in fourth form, so, the computer will help them with their SBA’s [School-Based Assessment].”

Both Saunders and Matthew urged the general public to recognise what is being done to ensure social transformation in St. Kitts, and the latter specifically encouraged others to “join in on making a positive impact on the young boys as the response may have an effect on us all”.
