Rotary Club of Liamuiga Spreads Christmas Cheer

Rotary Club of Liamuiga

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Famed journalist Eric Sevareid once said, “Christmas is a necessity.  There has to be at least one day of the year to remind us that we're here for something else besides ourselves.” It is in this spirit that members of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga (RCL) annually distribute Christmas hampers filled with food supplies and toiletries.

On Saturday December 22nd, 2012, members of RCL gathered together to complete care packages that included staple food items as well as household necessities like toilet paper, bath soaps and laundry detergent. Each year individuals identified with needs are shared with RCL by their neighbours, community advocates and fellow Rotarians then cross-referenced with listings from the Department of Social and Community Development. This year, packages were hand delivered to over 50 individuals living in communities around the island.

“Our annual Christmas Hamper Project is probably our most rewarding Club activity,” said RCL President Lester Hanley. “It is heart-warming to see the smiles and receive welcoming hugs when we arrive with these care packages. Admittedly, it is also heart wrenching to see the extreme needs of the most vulnerable in our communities.

“Our Club will continue such community uplift and development activities throughout the New Year and beyond,” President Hanley continued. “We are also very grateful to the corporate community for partnering with us this year. So a special thank you is extended to the Caribbean Credit Card Corporation Ltd. and also the Agro-Processing Unit and Taiwan Technical Mission.”

The final activity for RCL this year will be The Annual New Year’s Charity Ball at Carambola Beach Club (Dec 31, 2012 – Jan 1, 2013). Tickets are available at Warner's One Stop (Bird Rock), Plush Accessories (Cayon St., opposite LIME) or from any member of the Club. Proceeds will go towards funding the Club’s youth and community development projects in 2013.

The Rotary Club of Liamuiga takes this opportunity to thank all its supporters, friends and well-wishers for their support throughout 2012.
