Teenager hospitalised after being run over by trailer at J’Ouvert Jam

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – KAREEM CHUMNEY, a young man who was ran over by a trailer during yesterday morning’s (Dec. 26) J’Ouvert Jam, was reportedly under observation at the Joseph N. France General Hospital.

Head of the Security and Public Safety Committee for the Carnival Ivor Blake informed this media house that, according to information he received, the incident occurred sometime between 10:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

The incident is said to have occurred close to the junction of Fort and Central Streets. The circumstances are yet sketchy but Blake informed that the trailer which was occupied by the Small Axe Band ran over either one or both of his legs.

Information received by this publication suggests that the young man – said to be in his late teens – was dancing to the front of the trailer when the incident occurred.

The Ponds Extension resident was reportedly rushed to the hospital where he was admitted, treated and underwent a number of tests.

Blake indicated that, according to information he received, Chumney suffered no broken bones but has been hospitalised for observation.

He described the incident as “unfortunate” and noted that “it ought not to have happened”.

Blake told SKNVibes that just as it was for yesterday’s J’Ouvert, his committee would ensure measures are in place for the safety of revellers for the upcoming street activities. He however added that some responsibility lies with the revellers themselves.

“Having put in place all that we have put in place and having said all that we have said, it still depends on the individuals to take those precautions in ensuring that they enjoy themselves in a safe and responsible manner.”
