BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LESS than 48 hours after the shooting death of a young man on Nevis, the twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis recorded its second murder for the New Year.
According to a police press release, officers are investigating the death of Jelani Williams of Lime Kiln who suffered a fatal wound in the region of his chest.
“It is believed the incident occurred at or near the Basseterre Bus and Ferry Terminal,” the release reads.
This media house learnt that the incident occurred sometime after 10:00 last night (Jan. 2).
Police are asking persons who may have information relating to this incident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 and “you do not have to give your name or where you are from, and you may be eligible for a reward”.
Williams’ death has taken to two the amount of murders committed in the Federation for this year.
The first murder was that of 22-year-old Alex ‘Indu’ Claxton, also known as Alex Thompson of Bath Village, Nevis.
According to reports, Claxton was shot shortly after 5:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day after he had left an Old Year’s Night function at Sunshine’s Beach Bar and Restaurant at Pinney’s Beach for his Bath Village residence.
It was also reported that an altercation had broken out on the beach, where bottles and stones were being thrown.
Shortly after, the report of gunfire was heard and Claxton was found to have been shot multiple times in his back. He was rushed to the Alexandra Hospital in a private vehicle, but succumbed to his injuries.
Investigations into this murder are also ongoing and persons who have information to bring the perpetrator(s) to justice are also asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
Meanwhile, a person of interest is being sought by the police in relation to last night’s shooting of Vernon Elliott of St. Johnson Village.
Elliott was shot at exactly 8:00 p.m. while among revellers ‘jamming’ to the music of Nu Vybes Band on Church Street in the vicinity of Government Headquarters.
According to one reveller, after Elliott was shot, he ran for a short distance and collapsed on the center of Princes Street.
SKNVibes learnt that a vehicle from the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force had transported the wounded man to the JNF General Hospital, where he is currently warded after undergoing emergency surgery.
And the police are dispelling rumours that Elliott was shot by a member of the Police Force.
In a press release from the Force’s Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Lyndon David, “On Wednesday 2 January 2013 sometime around 8pm, there was a shooting incident in Basseterre. It is rumoured that the Police were involved in this incident, this is not true.”
