    Ezrette Henville

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – One of two brothers awaiting sentencing for committing a “robbery” offence, was moments ago whisked off to Her Majesty’s Prison where he will begin serving a 12-year sentence with hard labour.

Brothers Ezrette (19) and Travis Henville (16) were jointly charged with committing the October 12, 2007 offence and at the commencement of the September 2008 Criminal Assizes, Travis pleaded guilty while his brother put forth a ‘not guilty’ plea.

Ezrette’s trial began on September 24, and according to evidence heard, the brothers were part of a group who attacked Khali Pitt of Carifesta Village with knives and a hammer and stole from him a RAZR cellular phone. They also injured Pitt in the process which resulted in him having to take 14 stitches to his legs.

The jury returned a unanimous Guilty verdict.

Both brothers appeared before His Lordship Justice Francis Belle today (Oct. 6) and offered mitigating pleas before sentencing

    was passed.

“I am throwing myself at the mercy of the court” Ezrette told the judge adding that during the incident, “I was just trying to defend my brother and got caught up in a whole different situation.”

Travis told His Lordship that is he a mere ‘16 years of age’ and asked that the court exercise leniency which would provide him an opportunity to be rehabilitated, rejoin society, seek gainful employment and “settle down”.

Justice Belle, in handing down his sentence to Ezrette said, “Armed robbery is a very serious thing and the virtual complainant was not just robbed, he was attacked.” Belle noted that the VC’s ability to resist was what may have saved him from being killed.

Belle also made reference to Ezrette’s “history of violence” and just before passing sentence told him the message must be sent that the court does not tolerate such behaviour.

While Ezrette’s 12-year sentence begins today, his brother was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison where he will remain until December 2, 2008 when the Social Inquiry which the court ordered is to be submitted. ~~Adz:Left~~
