Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 10th, 2013 (SKNIS) -- The important role parents have in curbing antisocial activities among youth was highlighted this week.
“Parents, I need your help in continuing the fight to take the streets back from those who would seek to destroy our nation,” Commissioner of Police Celvin G. Walwyn said during a recent address. “I need your help in saving the lives of our young men. I need you to ask our sons to stop killing each other. I need you to turn our sons in if they are committing crimes of violence and terrorizing our nation.
“The safety and security of our Federation, is in our hands.”
The address to members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force gave an outline of strategies that have been successful over the past months and lead to an overall decrease in the crime rate. The top law enforcement officer stressed that he is a parent as well and deeply loves his children.
“I believe that you too are cut from the same cloth that I am, and that you love your children in the same way I love my children,” Commissioner Walwyn emphasized. “But you and I both know that we can tell when our children are not telling the truth and when they have done wrong. So what both of us have to do is to tell our children that their actions are not right and that there are consequences for these actions.”
The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has been saluted by many for the effective work carried out in 2012. Earlier this week, nine units in the agency received Letters of Commendation from the Office of the Prime Minister. Additionally, the Commissioner has received personal encouragement from individuals. He shared one such encounter with a fellow parent.
She said “thank you for standing up to the negative attacks from the media for the job you started when you first came here. My son is alive today, thank you for your actions. Do not stop. Do not let anyone run you from here. Me glad you come.”
Commissioner Walwyn assured that the security forces intend to maintain the peaceful environment and will “step up to the plate in 2013 even more than they did in 2012 and protect citizens while serving the community.”
