Central Basseterre, January 11th 2013 -- Popular young attorney Jonel Powell is tight-lipped about his rumored candidacy and political launch for the Central Basseterre Constituency#2 seat. Blogs on various social networks, particularly facebook, have indicated and suggested that the energetic 29 year old Deputy Chairman of the People’s Action Movement will be officially launched shortly as the Party’s candidate for the upcoming election which political pundits have declared will be held during the first quarter of this year.
One blog in particular even stated that a poll was conducted recently which indicated that Powell was favored over incumbent and Constituency representative Hon. Marcella Liburd.
A section of the blog reads “Word on the ground in St.Kitts is that Vibrant young Attorney and Deputy Chairman of the Peoples Action Movement Jonel Powell is expected of be officially launched shortly as the PAM Candidate for const #2. The 29 year old Powell favored well in a recent poll conducted.
The poll which was conducted in November and December showed that among the young voters between 18 and 40 Powell was favored 57% to incumbent Marcella Liburd's 43%. Among voters over 40 Powell was again favored with 53% to Liburds 47%. Overall when asked who voters will support 47% said Powell while 36% said Liburd with the remaining 17% undecided.”
However Powell as well as sources within the party are tight-lipped on the content of the blogs and whether or not the statements in the said blogs are factual or simply wishful thinking and speculation.
Powell said, “I am currently doing the groundwork necessary for my party to take back the seat that was proudly held by our country’s first Prime Minister Dr the Rt. Hon Sir Kennedy A Simmonds regardless of who the party’s choice as candidate. With regards to whether I am or will be that choice, the rumored launch and conducted polls I have no comment except to say that PAM will take back Constituency#2.”
Powell along with party Chairman Rusty Liburd are the two nominees vying for the candidacy in the Central Basseterre seat for the People’s Action Movement. Party Leader Hon. Shawn K. Richards has indicated that the party is ready and the party’s candidates will be announced and launched shortly.
