Washie: PM Douglas exposes his inadequacy by not allowing tabling of No Confidence Motion

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WHEN the Order Paper for today’s (Jan. 15) sitting of the Federal Parliament was released, it did not come as a surprise to many people in St. Kitts-Nevis that the Motion of No Confidence forwarded by the Opposition was not on the agenda.

Popular opinion and common practice within the Commonwealth suggest that issues of this nature ought to be handled expeditiously and as a matter of priority.

However, some have expressed that Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas – against whose government and leadership the Motion was filed – seems to be engaging stalling tactics to avoid it being tabled.

One such individual is historian, educator and social commentator Washington ‘Washie’ Archibald, who believes that by Dr. Douglas’ avoidance of the issue he is circumventing common Commonwealth practice while exposing his “inadequacy”.

“The Opposition should raise serious objection to any attempt to circumvent the practice throughout the Commonwealth that a vote of No Confidence takes precedence over any other matter. I expect that the Opposition will raise serious objection. I don’t expect them to succeed in bringing the Motion to the House, but if the Motion does not come to the House it is a sign of bad will on the part of the Prime Minister because this is a circumvention of a rule; a convention which is held dear throughout the Commonwealth.

“What Dr. Douglas is doing is exposing himself...he is showing his inadequacy. If he were sure that his administration was popular, he would have the Vote of No Confidence. The reason why he is trying not to have the Vote of No Confidence is that he has alienated two of his ministers and, somehow, he feels that they are going to vote in favour of the No Confidence Motion. As a matter of fact, in the meeting last week at the Village, they were pressuring Sam Condor to say how he would vote if the vote of No Confidence came up.”

Archibald hinted that if the Prime Minister were confident that he was running a “good administration”, he would not try to run from the Vote of No Confidence. And I expect the Opposition to create a furor in the House (today) in order to get that vote of No Confidence on the Order Paper”.
