January Criminal Assizes opens with four guilty pleas

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Criminal Assizes for January 2013 opened yesterday (Jan. 15) with 26 new cases, 21 traversed matters and four individuals pleading guilty to their charges.

     

    Among those who pleaded guilty was Shaweed Tobin Williams who was charged with having in his possession a number of housebreaking implements, including a hammer, at a location in Basseterre sometime during the night of Friday, June 22, 2012.

     

    Steve Percival and Kevon Gaskin also sought not to waste the court’s time and decided to plead guilty to their charge of one count of housebreaking and larceny which occurred on February 14, 2012.

     

    According to the facts read in Court, the individuals did break and enter the dwelling home of Judith and Sherwin Christopher from which they stole a quantity of baby clothes, gold chain, a laptop, perfume, a wedding band and gold earrings to the value of EC$ 4 852.

     

    Leroy Boone also pleaded guilty to housebreaking and larceny as well as receiving, which is said to have occurred in Sandy Point on October 5, 2011.

     

    According to the prosecution’s case, Boone broke into the home of Lavern Pemberton and stole a cellular phone, gold rings, bracelets and earrings. He is also charged with receiving the items valued at EC$5 295.

     

    His Lordship Justice Errol Thomas told the men that they would be sentenced later during the Assizes.

     

    The Assizes also saw Crown Counsel Rhonda Nisbett-Browne performing the duties of Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, following the retirement of Paulina Hendrickson.

     

    Of the 26 new cases, 16 are sex-related matters; five for rape, four for indecent assault and seven for unlawful carnal knowledge.

     

    All of the accused in these matters pleaded not guilty.
