Reports incident to police
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SENIOR Government Minister and Chairman of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris recently proclaimed to the nation that he was openly threatened and had lodged a complaint with the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.
Dr. Harris, during his opposition of the ‘Senators Increase Bill’ on Tuesday (Jan 15) in the Federal Parliament, indicated that on J’Ouvert morning he was accosted by a man – whom he said is from The Village area – who told him that he would be totally destroyed.
“I don’t have to call the name of the man because the man has been in trouble before and it may not be good. They young man came to tell me that I will be totally destroyed. I want, for the record, to say to the people that I’ve made a complaint to the police and I am waiting their investigation in it. I am waiting on it. But it is a serious charge to be made by one particular individual.”
Dr. Harris said the incident is evidence of the delinquency that has been allowed to take root in the society.
“How dare he come in the presence of witnesses to threaten me? It shows the level of cannibalism and tribalism and criminality that has been touted in our society today. And responsible people ought to take note that this is not a time for joke, this is a time when there are agents directly confronting people aided and abetted.”
Expounding on the nature of the threat, Dr. Harris said, “And they (are) bold enough to tell me all manner of things. Witnesses who saw the man threatening (me)…he comes to tell me who his boss is and what he and his boss will do to me. And I endure all of those things. He told me if I talk what was done to a certain politician at Marriott was bad, wait til dey finish with me!
“It is duress! That is what is happening! And people are going through these things. Nobody in the 21st century in St. Kitts and Nevis – if we are truthful and honest about democracy – ought to suffer the kind of indignities and threats and abuse.”
The Labour Party Chairman expressed his refusal to live a life of fear, his refusal to tolerate threats and his refusal to renege on his stance and belief.
“But I am not going to live my life in fear. It is a democracy that we want to build in St. Kitts and Nevis and people must be free to choose, people must be free to choose! You don’t have to agree with people’s choices, because I can’t agree with many of his choices. My conscience is clear. This is my country, I love my country, I love it greatly.”
He thanked those who had offered prayers on his behalf and petitioned for continued support in that regard.
