A pensive Director of Culture Creighton Pencheon reflects on the legacy of Oral "Shaka Bum" Powell |
Basseterre, St. Kitts (May 12, 2005): The legacy of calypsonian Oral Powell also known as Shaka Bum, 48, was touted by Director of Culture Creighton Pencheon on Thursday, during an interview with SKNIS.
Pencheon, reminisced on the impact the calypsonian had on the art form when he first debuted on the big stage in 2001 describing it as a fresh breath of air.
Those of us who remember the (National) Calypso Finals of 2001 will remember how Carnival City was buzzing with excitement when he was announced to appear (on stage) and when he came on, Pencheon stated, adding that his authentic, traditional, ole time calypso style was a hit with fans.
Mr. Pencheon, himself a cultural performer, indicated that Shaka Bum leaves behind a great legacy. I think we will remember Shaka Bum for his conscious lyrics, sweet melodies and the passion with which he performed his songs, he disclosed. How could we (ever) forget the clarity, the melodious and sweet voice of Shaka Bum.

The Department of Culture and the Festivals Secretariat are reportedly in contact with the Green Valley Committee to ensure that the funeral of Shaka Bum comes off in a manner befitting his legacy.
The director of culture revealed that his department will be well represented at the event slated for Tuesday, May 17, at Maynards Park in Cayon.
Brother, you have paid your dues, you have made your contribution, you have brought joy to our lives. May you rest in peace, a pensive Creigthon Pencheon concluded.
