Court overturns Supervisor of Elections’ decision to restore names

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) was back in Court today and, this time, securing a judicial victory with the house of justice reinstating names to the Voters’ List that were removed in 2011.

The CCM’s Chairman, Stedmond Tross, explained to SKNVibes the reason for the party’s going back to court and the result.

“On Friday, after at about 2:00 p.m., we were presented with a new List. On that List were some 50 names in St. John’s that were not there on the List that we had prior. These names were from different constituencies and the Supervisor sought to put them into St. John’s on Friday afternoon.”

He said the CCM took the matter to court and Justice John Benjamin ordered that the names are to remain on the List in the constituencies where the persons were registered and not be transferred to the St. John’s List.

Tross also explained that Justice Benjamin ordered that the names which were removed from the Voters List in 2011 without due process are to be restored.

“The Supervisor of Elections sought to restore names that we removed in 2012, based on the Election Petition Case. Our contention was that you cannot use the Election Petition Case and ignore (those names removed in) 2011. So we wanted those names included...and they are included.”

The decision comes just hours before Nevisians and residents of Nevis go to the polls to elect the government of their choice to manage the affairs of the island for the next five years.

Just days before, the CCM went before the same Court seeking to gain injunctive relief against two NRP members in an attempt to debar them from the contesting the Local Elections.

    Their request was however denied.
