Press Release

    St. George’s Grenada, January 21st, 2013  --  Grenada’s National Elections will in no way affect the hosting of the Grenada leg of the West Indies/Zimbabwe Cricket series, Sports Minister Hon. Patrick Simmons said on Monday.

    In a brief statement the Minister addressed rumors that Grenada had lost the tournament due to security reasons after the announcement of the February 19 date for the national elections.

    The Sports Minister read from two documents to give the assurance that Grenada will indeed host its leg of the West Indies/Zimbabwe Cricket Series.

    One of the documents was from the Royal Grenada Police Force which will be providing security for the tournament.  The Minister read a letter signed by Commissioner of Police Willan Thompson, dated 17 January 2012. It read;

    “Be advised that the Royal Grenada Police Force will provide adequate security for the players and patrons for all matches to be hosted by the Grenada Cricket Association in conjunction with the West Indies Cricket Board from the 15-24 February 2013.”

    The other document was from the West Indies Cricket Board. Part of it read, “The Board of Directors accepted the recommendations that the matches should be hosted in Grenada based on the written report received from the Commissioner of the Royal Grenada Police Force and the independent report on the CARICOM impacts.

    Based on the above mentioned we confirmed that the matches scheduled for Grenada will remain scheduled in Grenada.”

    The two teams, Zimbabwe and West Indies will arrive on February 16 and 20 respectively.
