BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young man is currently in police custody and is expected to be charged shortly in connection with a drive-by shooting that took place last evening (Jan. 21) in Conaree, St. Kitts.
Police Commissioner Celvin ‘CG’ Walwyn informed the media during a press briefing held earlier today in his office that police are investigating the incident.
He said the shooting occurred at 6:35 p.m. and that the alleged perpetrator was caught by members of the Delta Squad around 8:00 p.m. that night.
COP Walwyn said that “five shots were fired in Conaree” but “Nobody was injured…just shots fired”.
He told members of the media that “we were able to get a pad on the car and description. Delta Squad went out searching for the car and found it, and found him. He’s in custody”.
The COP added that members of the Delta Squad had found the young man somewhere in the countryside.
COP Walwyn was questioned by the press about the charges expected to be laid against the young man, how many persons were involved and if the alleged shooter had fired aimed shots at anyone.
He revealed that it was just one individual involved.
Unconfirmed information provided by the Commissioner about the gunfire was, “I think they may have been fired at somebody.”
“If we have no victim, we have no charge. We will have to charge him for shooting in the public,” COP Walwyn added.
Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Lyndon David, who was present said the formal charge would be “Discharging a firearm in public”, or if the shots were fired at someone then it would be “Shooting at with intent”.
In a subsequent press release, police stated that according to eyewitnesses report, a white motor car drove through the Conaree area and five shots were discharged from within the vehicle.
“Based on eyewitness reports, a massive search was conducted island-wide for the perpetrator and the car which were both found and taken into police custody by the joint security forces.
“The Commissioner of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force wishes to thank the general public for their quick assistance in reporting valuable information which lead to the speedy apprehension of the suspect,” the release read.
The release also stated that anyone having information pertaining to this incident is asked to call CRIME STOPPERS at 1-800-8477.
“Remember, you will remain anonymous and you may be eligible for a reward,” it added.
