Over 500 secondary school teachers in St. Kitts and Nevis to get latops

By: Erasmus Williams, Press Release (CUOPM)

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, January 22nd 2013 (CUOPM) – Secondary school teachers in both St. Kitts and Nevis are to get their laptops.

This was disclosed Tuesday following Monday’s routine Cabinet Meeting chaired by the Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

“At Monday’s cabinet meeting, an update on the partnership between the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) and the Federal Government to distribute laptop computers to secondary school teachers was sought,” said Minister of Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty in a post-Cabinet briefing.

Mr. Carty, who is also the Minister of Education reported to his Cabinet colleagues that a recent assessment reveals that there are about 506 secondary school teachers in the Federation with 140 of them on the island of Nevis and 366 on the island of St. Kitts, taking into account both public and private secondary schools.

He informed the Cabinet that a schedule for the distribution of the computers already in stock is being drawn up and that schools will be notified within the upcoming week.

“Cabinet was adamant that secondary school teachers in particular deserve to be supported by being provided with a tool to facilitate teaching and research so that they can deliver a truly relevant and modern course of education to their students who themselves have already received their laptop computers under the government’s laptop distribution programme,” said Minister Carty.
