    Health Minister Hon. Rupert Herbert
BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MAY 12TH 2005
St. Kitts and Nevis Minister of Health, the Hon. Rupert Herbert hopes the International University of Nursing, which is scheduled to start classes here next week, will help to reduce the exodus of Caribbean nurses to the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.
We hope that the demand for our nurses will decrease if the global shortage is addressed this way, he told the BBC Caribbean Service in an interview on Wednesday.

Minister Herbert said that although the number of nurses which would be trained at the International University of Nursing would be a small drop in the bucket, it will still in some way, allay concerns about the brain drain from the Caribbean region.

Dean of the nursing school, Dr. Linda A. Simunek said recently that classes at the US$10 million dollar facility will begin on May 16th . The Second Semester begins in September and the Third Semester in January 2006.

Dr. Simunek said some 160 students have already submitted applications and the first semester will begin with students from the United States, Barbados, Africa, India, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, the United States, the Philippines, Jamaica and St. Kitts and Nevis.

The University will offer associate degrees, bachelors degrees and masters degrees in nursing. Under the agreement, the International University of Nursing has an obligation to increase its enrollment to 1500 students.

St. Kitts and Nevis beat out several Caribbean countries as the site for the nursing university in the Caribbean that will train hundreds of nurses from around the world.
