BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TWO individuals narrowly escaped injury yesterday morning (Jan. 23) after a large piece of rock fell on the car in which they were travelling along the Island Main Road in the vicinity of the bay in Old Road, St. Kitts.
Sergeant Carl Caines, Head of the Traffic Department, informed this media house that the incident took place at about 11:40 a.m.
He said that motorcar P 1643 was travelling from the Sandy Point/Newton Ground direction and while in the vicinity of the bay in Old Road a boulder fell from the hill on the mountainside and damaged the front bumper and centre of the vehicle.
“The front bonnet of the car was dented and the grill smashed,” SGT. Caines said.
The car was driven by Keith Rawlins of Newton Ground with lone passenger Naomi Rawlins of Sandy Point.
Caines reported that neither of the two had sustained injury.
At the time of the interview, he revealed that the roadway was cleared of many fallen rocks and traffic had been “moving along slowly”.
Shortly after the incident traffic flow was temporarily restricted to allow vehicles travelling on the seaside of the road only.
Workers from the Public Works Department were seen cleaning up the area that was littered with dirt and stones.
Caines estimated the size of the rock that fell on the car to be about two feet in length and six inches in height.
Furthermore, when asked what caused the rock to fall, the Traffic Department’s Head said it seemed that the dirt got loose.
He however cautioned that the Traffic Department is “advising persons to be careful when driving along that stretch of road”.
