BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PREMIER of Nevis, the Hon. Vance Winkworth Amory has declared that his first order of business is to address the high taxes imposed on the island and to lead the people along the path of economic growth.

Amory was sworn in to the office of Premier and fitted with his instrument of appointment at about 6:00 last evening (Jan 23), less than 12 hours after his party – the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) - was officially announced winner of the January 22 Local Elections in Nevis.

The Swearing-in Ceremony took place as the Nevis Circuit Court where Amory took Oaths of Allegiance and Secrecy.

Minutes after his party’s victory was announced, Amory told members of the local media that after the swearing-in of his Ministers would have taken place “we will sit down very seriously and have the portfolios distributed and assigned. And then we will begin to look at how we implement our policies, to be what we believe is the transformation of the economy by looking at what we can do”.

He indicated that dealing with the issues of high taxes is one which is foremost on his government’s agenda.

“Our first order of business is to look at high taxes and look at how we can address that. And I have said many, many times that the IMF ought not to be imposing what they consider to be good policy for us. We must have the ability to do that for ourselves and to look out for the people, our people…”

Amory – along with his Ministers – Mark Brantley and Alexis Jeffers – are expected to be sworn into their respective offices on Saturday (Jan. 26). The venue for the ceremony is yet to be announced.
