(L-R): Hon. Rupert Herbert, Mrs. Watson, PM Douglas and Glen"Ghost" Phillip

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE political torch was officially passed in Constituency 4 this weekend when, after 13 years of public service in the New Guinea to Challengers areas, Minister of Health and Gender Affairs, Hon. Rupert Herbert handed the proverbial mantle over to his successor, Glen ‘Ghost’ Phillip.

With celebration and sensation similar to a political public meeting, the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party officially opened its office in Old Road with its next representative for Constituency #4 in the forefront of the event.

Although Phillip has not yet been officially launched, the crowd’s screams and cheers and special tributes to him were, according to the party leader and Prime Minister of the Federation, Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, “signs to show that he is already accepted and appreciated”.

Many individuals from the constituency, whether through poetry or dramatization, thanked Hon. Rupert Herbert, the current Labour representative for the New Guinea to Challengers electorate, while at the same time warmly welcoming Phillip “to steer their constituency aright”.

Phillip expressed how honoured he was for being asked by the Labour party to be the representative for the area for the next general elections and openly thanked the party for the opportunity.

“This office is not just my office, it’s not just LABOUR office; it’s an office for the people of this constituency. Every man, woman and child in this constituency is welcomed here to chat, to engage in fellowship, to ask questions, to discuss matters and enjoy my hospitality.

This office will be a symbol of me and Labour. This is a historic moment for Constituency 4 because by being here together to celebrate the opening of this office, we are all together making clear our serious commitment to move forward for the people of Constituency 4, and to do so with hope with confidence and with determination.

“I would publicly like to thank the Hon, Rupert Herbert for his contributions made for thirteen years at the constituency level, for St. Kitts and the Federation.

This night is for celebrating, for togetherness and for getting the feeling of unity as we commit ourselves to move as one and work as one and dedicate ourselves as one to the task ahead,” the political novice told the gathering of Labour candidates, constituents and other invited guests.

Phillip explained that he had accepted the call to serve his constituency because “the history of the party, the impact and the plans and programmes that it has been setting forth over numerous years” all drew him to join the movement.

He noted that he wants all of the middle-aged and elderly persons to be reminded, through him, of the “power that they have to shape and to guide their children, grandchildren and other young people in the neighbourhood just by making certain that young people they know stand tall, aim high and believe in themselves”.

“I want you to know that I understand your pains and frustration. Not too long ago, I wondered what my future would hold. Now, I am committed to working alongside today’s youth, to have new options and to help them as they chart their way forward. All of us have to be ready to shape, guide and prepare our young people for a bright and stable future.   ~~Adz:Right~~

“My candidacy will be about building, you and me together, building a new sense of community, building a new sense of concern for one another, building a new sense that together, through hard work and sacrifice, we can and will make others’ lives better. In the old days, it was ‘Each one teach one’ and ‘One for all, all for one’; that is the spirit this country needs and that is the spirit that together you and I should bring to constituency #4. You will see these traits in me first as a candidate and then as your parliamentary representative.”

Phillip joined the Prime Minister and other Labour representatives in officially declaring the office open with the ceremonial cutting of the red ribbon.

Phillip encouraged those present “who may not have much at this moment, to believe that if you work hard, believe in your abilities, and try your best, good things will happen to you”.
