BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A large number of citizens and residents of the twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis yesterday afternoon (Jan. 25) participated in a People's Action Movement-organised march of No Confidence in Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas and his Labour Party Government.
Bearing placards and national flags, they paraded through the streets of Basseterre voicing their disgust with the current state of affairs and lack of confidence they now have in the Labour Party Administration.
Some were heard shouting “Doctor you done”.
The march got under way at around 5:00 p.m. and made its way east along Cayon Street. The conjunction of Cayon and Church Street was blocked off by security officials to the disgust of many protesters, restricting them from using that thoroughfare.
The March however continued along Cayon Street before making a right on West Square Street and right onto Bank Street for a rally.
Hundreds of individuals gathered on Bank Street to hear the messages of the speakers who were made up of officials from the PAM.
Thos officials who addressed the crowd were the Hon. Eugene Hamilton, Lindsay Grant, Party Leader Shawn Richards and hopeful candidate Jonel Powell.
Some spoke on the issue of the Land-for-Debt swap, while others voiced their disapproval on a number of other issues including the contamination at the Basseterre, High School, the high National Debt, Kittitian Hill, La Valley, the Integrity in Public Life Bill, and the Senators (Increasing of Number) Bill, 2012.
“I have studied Denzil Douglas recently and I have noticed that Denzil Douglas has approached politics like a weasel…let me tell you why I say that.
“Prime Minister Douglas has approached his politics just as how a weasel approaches its prey,” Hamilton said.
He said that it can only be a weasel that on one day fired Sam Condor as Leader of Government Business and turn up in a meeting and request a hug from him.
PAM’s Deputy Chairman Powell elucidated: “Ladies and gentlemen, today is the start of a new beginning. We need a change in this country…it is everybody feeling it. It is time to forget the party politics and we need you to come together and vote according to your conscience.”
In a passionate presentation, Richards urged the Prime Minister to call an immediate election.
“No matter how he runs, no matter how he hide, his time has come to an end and we are going to continue to pressure him until he calls an election and we get a good and proper government in this country.”
Richards was of the opinion that the Dr. Douglas was afraid of the No Confidence Motion because he knows he would no longer be Prime Minister.
The No Confidence March follows two previous marches organised by the PAM in November and December, last, respectively to protest against the Land-for-Debt swap.
